Sikkim is one of the lower Indian Himalayan region (As compare to Ladakh, Upper Himachal, Kashmir) it has the maximum diversity of fauna and flora. Owing to its altitudinal gradation, the state has a wide variety of plants, from tropical to temperate to alpine and tundra, and is perhaps one of the few regions to exhibit such a diversity within such a small area.

Sikkim, a petit sate in the Indian Himalayas, borders Nepal in the west, the Chinese controlled Tibet to the north and east, and Bhutan in the southeast. From the Indian border it is well connected to the state of West Bengal from the south end.

According to the ancient believes it is known as ‘Indrakil’ meaning in Hindi: garden of Indra, the king-god of heaven, in Hindu religious texts. The predominant religions are Hinduism and Vajrayana Buddhism.

THE FLORA::

 The state tree, with a huge range of species occurring from subtropical to alpine regions. Orchids, figs, laurel, bananas, sal trees and bamboo in the lower altitudes of Sikkim. Where as on the higher altitudes there are: oaks, chestnuts, maples, birches, alders, and also the  magnolias grow in huge numbers. The alpine vegetation donates:  juniper, pine, firs, cypresses and rhododendrons. These vegetation can be typically found between an altitude of 3000 to 5 500 Mts.          

 

It has today about verities of  6 tree ferns, 10 oak, 30 rhododendron species, varieties, 16 conifer species, 599 flowering plants, 500 orchids, 59 Primula species, 24 bamboo varieties, 400 types of ferns and ferns allies, and over 600 medicinal plants. A type of the Poinsettia, locally known as “Christmas Flower”, can be found in abundance .

                 

 THE WILD LIFE

Naturally, Sikkim owes to its religious value of the two predominant religions Hindu and Buddhism in particular that we still find the wild life thriving, unlike any other state of the North east. Where you can find the forest but not the inhabitants.

The wild life consist of the famous Red Panda ( State animal of Sikkim). Sikkims rich fauna includes the snow leopard, musk deer, Bhoral, Himalayan Tahr, Himalayan marmot, serow, goral, barking deer, common langur, Himalayan Black Bear, clouded leopard, Marbled Cat leopard cat, wild dog, Tibetan wolf, hog badger, binturong, jungle cat and the civet cat and ofcouse the Yaks which are domesticated for their milk, butter and for carriages etc.     

                 

FOR THE BIRD WATCHERS:

The bird watcher can almost be consumed here with some of the most sought-after wingis like:  the Impeyan pheasant, the crimson horned pheasant, the snow partridge, the snow cock, the lammergeyer and griffon vultures, as well as golden eagles, quail, plovers, woodcock, sandpipers, pigeons, Old World flycatchers, babblers and robins. A total of 550 species of birds have been recorded in Sikkim, some of which have been declared endangered.
